Woodworking Hira
Located in Shiga Prefecture, Nakagawa Woodworking Hira produces handmade wooden products by craftsmen led by Shuji Nakagawa, a third generation craftsman, with a focus on traditional Oke (wooden pails or buckets) making that has continued since the Muromachi Period. While maintaining traditional woodworking techniques, our workshop is also actively incorporating new innovations into its works.
Our workshop also offers hands-on woodworking workshops, teaching visitors about the appeal and history of wood.
Our works based in tradition and innovation are appreciated by the masses.
Traditional Oke making
techniques and
new innovations
At Nakagawa Woodworking, we value the good old techniques of Oke making while blending them with modern sensibilities.
Starting from the selection of Japanese wood, craftsmen assemble the Oke by hand, carefully adjusting each part. Assembling the Oke requires unique techniques and tools, and the wood is securely fastened together without the use of metal nails to achieve long-lasting strength. Resulting in a product that enhances the beauty of the wood, while becoming more flavorful the more it is used.
While preserving the traditional techniques, new Oke are created in pursuit of functionality and design.
